About Sean Cranbury
Sean Cranbury is a Vancouver writer, literary organizer, and builder of cultural infrastructure.
For more than three decades, his work has connected writers, readers, booksellers, publishers, and independent cultural organizations. He founded the Real Vancouver Writers’ Series, created Books on the Radio, co-created the Advent Book Blog, and served as the first executive director of the BC and Yukon Book Prizes.
His current work through Sympathetic Technology explores how writers and mission-driven organizations can use digital systems without surrendering attention, judgment, or the human relationships that give the work meaning.

2010 to 2025
Founder, artistic director, host, and organizer
Created a volunteer-run literary series and writing school that served emerging and established writers for fifteen years. Real Vancouver presented more than 75 events featuring over 300 writers, working with independent bookstores, presses, festivals, and cultural organizations across Canada.
2019 to 2021
First executive director
Led the organization through its transition to an internally administered society, annual prize adjudication, gala and touring programs, grant development, and the rapid reinvention of public programming during the first year of the pandemic.
2013 to 2014
Steering Committee member, Canada Council for the Arts
Served on the Steering Committee for this generational project to reform public funding for literary arts individuals and organizations across Canada. The work culminated in a two-day conference in Montreal featuring more than 250 literary professionals from across the country.
2009 onward
Creator and executive editor
Developed a radio program, podcast, and editorial platform devoted to books, writers, publishing, and the cultural life surrounding them. The project began on CJSF 90.1 FM and extended literary conversation beyond launches and festival stages.
2012 to 2016
General manager, Storm Crow Pubs
Organized and hosted public readings at the Storm Crow Tavern and Storm Crow Alehouse during my time with those organizations. We hosted regular readings in the restaurants for local authors, especially those working in science fiction, fantasy, and affiliated nerdy genres.
Annual project
Co-creator and editor
Built a community recommendation project that invited writers, publishers, booksellers, and readers from across Canada to champion the books they wanted other people to discover.
Since the late 1980s
Bookseller, reader, and public advocate
Began working with books before the internet reshaped publishing and bookselling, including roles at Chapman Books, Sophia Books, and the Virgin Megastore. That direct relationship with readers continues to inform every community project.

Instructor, speaker, and workshop leader
Teaches practical sessions on close reading, literary craft, digital publishing, sustainable visibility, and the systems that help writers maintain a long creative life. This includes recurring work with the Surrey International Writers’ Conference.

Has worked alongside independent bookstores, small presses, magazines, festivals, and artist-run spaces, including Iron Dog Books, Geist, Sad Mag, Poetry Is Dead, Project Space, the Griffin Poetry Prize, and the Vancouver Writers Fest.

Develops creator-first infrastructure and durable communications practices that help writers and cultural organizations remain connected to their communities while protecting attention, agency, and the integrity of the work.
